Buhari Orders IGP Solomon Arase To Reduce Policemen Attached To VIPs

.Buhari has ordered Arase to return his subordinates from guarding “big men” to their direct duties in the streets.
President Muhammadu Buhari today instructed Solomon Arase that the number of police officers attached to dignitaries on permanent basis should be immediately and substantially reduced.
All those policemen withdrawn from guarding the high-ranked officials should return to their regular duties.
Besides that Buhari called the practice of extorting money from aspiring applicants wishing to join police ranks unacceptable.
President Buhari emphasized during the meeting at Aso villa that the recruitment process should become transparent and old practice of collecting money from those who want to enlist to the police should be eliminated.
At the same time during the meeting at presidential villa the permanent secretary of the ministry of police affairs, James Obiegbu, named three main challenges for the police service – lack of police officers, financial difficulties and non-rehabilitation of police training schools.
According to the estimates of the chairman of the police service commission, Mike Okiro, Nigeria requires more than 300,000 police officers for effective policing.
At the same time he thanked Buhari for approving the recruitment of 10,000 additional police officers.
Three months ago, The Nigeria Police Council confirmed the appointment of Solomon Arase as the new inspector general of police.
The former IGP, Suleiman Abba, was sacked by President Jonathan because of his indiscipline in the police force.
Arase immediately has given a directive to Police special units to start enforcing anti-corruption measures in order to rid the force of erring officers.
Two months ago Solomon Arase has warned personnel policemen who carry boxes and do other chores for VIPs they are assigned to protect would be arrested immediately.
