Top three: The Duchess of Cambridge,
pictured at Princess Charlotte's christening, made the top three in a
poll of the most stylish royals
The Duchess
of Cambridge has been named the world's third most stylish royal in a
new poll, with only Crown Princess Mary of Denmark, 43, and Queen Maxima
of the Netherlands, 44, deemed more fashionable.
But
while Kate, 33, and fourth-placed Queen Letizia of Spain, 42, are
household names, many of the others to make the list are more obscure,
among them Denmark's Australian-born Crown Princess.
One
who will be familiar to most is Sophie, Countess of Wessex, 50, who
took fifth spot - less than a week after she made it onto Vanity Fair's
annual best-dressed list.
Stiff
competition: Second place was taken by the Netherlands' Queen Maxima
while Crown Princess Mary of Denmark (right) came first
Described
by Hello! magazine, which conducted the poll, as 'universally popular',
Sophie's impeccable dress sense was lauded as 'very classic with a
modern twist'.
Boutique
owner Laura B added: 'She's always been interested in fashion but I
think she has grown into herself. She's very instantaneous - you can see
when she likes something and then she'll go with it. She's not shy
about making her mind up - she knows what she wants.'
In
sixth place on the list was the Middle East's only entry, which came in
the shape of Jordan's glamorous 44-year-old Queen Rania who was
described as being 'the epitome of the cool, modern-day woman'.
Monaco's
South African-born Princess Charlene, 37, the wife of the
Principality's Albert II, took seventh place on the grounds that 'she
never puts a stylish foot wrong'.
Stunning: The winner, Denmark's Crown
Princess Mary, is seen looking stunning at the wedding of Princess
Madeleine of Sweden in 2013
Good work:
43-year-old Mary, who is Australian-born, was lauded for always looking
appropriate while retaining a fashionable edge
Glamorous: Mary narrowly beat the
Netherlands' Queen Maxima (right) to take the top spot. The two are
pictured during the Dutch royals' state visit to Denmark in March this
year and had arrived on Samsø Island following a choppy ferry journey
The
final three places were all taken by Scandinavian royals: Sweden's
Princess Madeleine and Crown Princess Victoria in eighth and ninth spots
and Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, 41, in tenth position.
Like
Sweden's new Princess Sofia, 30, Crown Princess Mette-Marit raised
eyebrows when she wed Crown Prince Haakon in 2001 thanks to a checkered
past that included a son, Marius, whose father was a convicted drug
user.
Since
marrying Haakon, Mette-Marit has gone on to have a further two
children, Princess Ingrid Alexandra and Prince Sverre Magnus, and has
built up a reputation for humanitarian work as well as style.
Described
as 'understated' by Hello!, she's a fan of big name labels such as
Valentino - the latter worn for the recent wedding of Pierre Casiraghi
and Beatrice Borromeo in Monte Carlo last month.
Stalwart: The Duchess of Cambridge, who is currently on maternity leave, was voted the third most stylish royal this year
Immaculate:
The Duchess, seen left arriving in Australia, with Prince George at a
polo match (centre), enjoying Manly Beach in Sydney, right, was
described as being 'immaculate if slightly safe'. Regardless, she has
long made headlines for her sense of style
Elegant: The impossibly elegant Queen Letizia of Spain, pictured last week during a family holiday in Mallorca, came fourth
Chic: The Spanish queen, 42, is famous
for her neat tailoring and muted colours. Pictured in Paris during a
state visit to France in June
Stylish
though Mette-Marit is, it was 43-year-old Crown Princess Mary of
Denmark who took the top spot with the royal, who married the
Scandinavian country's Crown Prince Frederik in 2004, commended for
having perfected the art of 'making appropriate fashion choices that
still have an edge'.
Second-placed
Queen Maxima of the Netherlands was hailed for her 'tremendous sense of
fun' and penchant for quirky accessories, among them 'standout
necklaces' and 'eye-catching earrings'.
The
Duchess of Cambridge meanwhile, who was last seen in Portsmouth as the
America's Cup got underway two weeks ago, was described as 'immaculate'
if 'a little safe'.
Chic: Sophie Wessex, who last week became the only royal to secure a spot on Vanity Fair's best dressed list, came fifth
Sartorial
overhaul: The Countess of Wessex has become increasingly stylish in
recent years, helped along by lashings of Emilia Wickstead
And relax: Sophie Wessex gives a
masterclass in off-duty stripes at the Festival of British Eventing at
Gatcombe Park last weekend
Striking: Jordan's 44-year-old Queen Rania was the only royal from the Middle East to make an appearance on the list
Tailoring: Queen Rania favours a bold colour palette and is wedded to structured dresses and beautifully worked tailoring
Glossy: Princess Charlene of Monaco might be a new mother but you wouldn't know it looking at her enviable wardrobe
Gorgeous: Princess Madeleine of Sweden is another glossy new mother and took eighth position on the list - just behind Charlene
Stylish:
38-year-old Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden took the next place on the
list and has long been a favourite with fashion fans
Floral reign: Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, 41, won the final place on the list thanks to her stellar sense of style
Pared down: Mette-Marit shows off her style during a visit to New York last year (left) and in Hanoi a few months later
